A Different Kind of Christmas Countdown

There's something special about counting down to Christmas. Whether it's opening a little door on an Advent calendar, lighting a candle or watching the excitement build in children, these small traditions remind us that Christmas is getting closer.

But what if, this Advent, we counted down in a slightly different way?

Alongside the chocolates, decorations and preparations, we could make room for 24 small acts of kindness, prayer and encouragement. Nothing complicated or expensive. Just simple ways to share God's love with the people around us.

After all, Advent is a season of waiting and preparation, as we look forward to celebrating the birth of Jesus. And perhaps one of the loveliest ways to prepare our hearts is by thinking about others.

24 Days, 24 Little Acts of Love

You don't need to do something extraordinary every day. Often, it's the smallest gestures that mean the most.

Here are 24 ideas to inspire your own Advent countdown

  1. Send a handwritten card to someone who could use a little encouragement.
  2. Pray for a friend who is going through a difficult time.
  3. Invite someone for a cuppa who might otherwise spend the day alone.
  4. Donate something useful to a local charity or food bank.
  5. Read the Nativity story together as a family.
  6. Leave an encouraging note for someone to discover.
  7. Call a relative you haven't spoken to in a while.
  8. Thank someone whose kindness often goes unnoticed.
  9. Share a favourite Bible verse with someone who needs hope.
  10. Bake something homemade and share it with a neighbour.
  11. Offer practical help to someone who has a lot on their plate.
  12. Light a candle and pray for people facing hardship this Christmas.
  13. Give someone your undivided attention, without checking your phone.
  14. Support a local community initiative or Christmas appeal.
  15. Tell someone what you appreciate about them.
  16. Take a winter walk and thank God for the beauty of creation.
  17. Invite someone to a Christmas church service or carol concert.
  18. Make a small care package for someone who needs cheering up.
  19. Let someone go ahead of you in a queue.
  20. Pray for peace in places affected by conflict.
  21. Share a Christmas memory with an older friend or relative.
  22. Do something helpful without being asked.
  23. Spend a few quiet moments reflecting on what the birth of Jesus means to you.
  24. On Christmas Eve, give thanks for the greatest gift of all: God's love shown through Jesus.

Make It a Family Tradition

One lovely way to bring this idea to life is to write each activity on a small card, fold it and place it in a jar or hang it from a length of ribbon.

Each morning, choose a card together and see how you can put it into practice.

Children might enjoy decorating the cards, choosing the day's activity or keeping a little Advent journal. You could even combine the activities with your usual Advent calendar, making each day about both receiving and giving.

And don't worry if you miss a day or an activity doesn't quite go to plan. This isn't another Christmas checklist to complete. It's simply an invitation to be a little more thoughtful and intentional during a busy season.

Making Space for What Matters

The Christmas story begins with an extraordinary act of love. God came into the world through Jesus, not in grandeur or luxury, but in the humility of a manger.

It's a reminder that love doesn't need to arrive with great ceremony. It can be found in ordinary moments, in a conversation, a helping hand, a quiet prayer or a simple act of generosity.

As we count down the days to Christmas, perhaps we can look beyond everything still to be bought, wrapped or organised, and notice the people God has placed around us.

Because sometimes the most meaningful thing we can give someone this Christmas is our time, our kindness and the reassurance that they are not forgotten.
